What Gemini for Windows can do and how to test it properly

Gemini now has a dedicated app for Windows 10 and 11. Alt + Space opens it over your current task, while the main workspace can use connected Google services, handle longer jobs and create images or video.

Alt + Space is useful until it gets annoying
The shortcut helps with a quick question about an open document, a rough email or a list of titles. You stay inside the current job instead of hunting for a browser tab.
Check whether another app already owns the keys. Review notifications and startup behaviour too. A shortcut that barges into every session turns a small convenience into irritating digital clutter.
Use the full workspace for longer jobs
The main app can continue a conversation, prepare a summary and work with connected Gmail or Drive content. That is clearer than squeezing a complicated task into a tiny overlay.
Start with one project and the minimum useful access. See which files and messages are visible. Do not throw confidential material at the tool just because the connection button looks harmless.

Image and video tools still need review
The app can launch image and video generation. It is handy for a draft visual, storyboard or presentation idea, but it does not check odd details, broken lettering or usage rights for you.
Work on a copy, keep the original and compare both. That boring routine is cheaper than discovering a lively piece of AI nonsense inside the final client deck.

Run a fifteen minute usefulness test
Choose one action: shorten a document, find a message or build a plan. Time it, verify the facts and count manual corrections. Then complete the same task with your usual method.
Keep the app when it saves real time after review. If the useful feature needs another plan, is missing in your region or only flashes nicely, remove the shortcut without ceremony.
